Creative Bridges CDT Supervisors: top tips for starting out
01
Review the regulations for thesis examination. Understand the rules and demystify the examination process.
02
Work out how you work best and how to maintain your wellbeing. Identify when you are most and least productive, then build a realistic routine around those times. Take proper breaks and set achievable expectations. Writing 250 words a day can be enough if it fits your plan.
03
Do not compare your progress with others. Your supervisors are best placed to judge whether you are ahead or behind.
04
Read widely, recognising that you may ultimately use 20% of what you read.
05
Feeling insecure at times is normal.
06
Attend the research seminar series and other events.
07
You will need structure, a plan and clear controls. Creative Bridges CDT provides structure through the cohort and supervisors; your plan is your responsibility; regular monthly meetings and the transfer/upgrade process provide checkpoints and controls.
08
A PhD uses many of the same skills as project management or managing a production.
09
If you use referencing software, start using it from the very beginning.
