Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I have cross Institutional supervision?

Yes. You would still need to identify one supervisor to act as your ‘home’ supervisor and to apply to their institution as your home institution.

Do I need to have been offered a place in order to apply for a studentship?

No. You need to have begun an application for a place and use your applicant ID in your studentship application. You will need to have been offered and accepted for a place in order to take up a studentship if you are successful.

What kinds of evidence for professional experience might I use instead of an MA in meeting entry requirements?

While we do not need additional documentary evidence, we would anticipate the answers to the studentship question on circumstances to be used to provide detail on your career and its relevance. It would also be sensible to inform referees of the need for an account of your professional experiences. Further details may be sought during the selection process.

Who should be my referees?

If possible, at least one reference should be from someone who has taught you at post-graduate level.

If you are using referees that reflect your professional experiences, they should be able to comment on how your experience and skills might prepare you for a prolonged period of research and study.

While we would not preclude a potential supervisor from also acting as a referee, there should be at least one referee who is not on your supervision team.

Do I need to do anything in addition to be considered for the ring-fenced studentship?

Applicants eligible for the ring-fenced studentship will be identified through responses to questions about ethnicity and via an opt-in question on the studentship application form.

My project is practice-based, can I apply?

Yes. The AHRC supports practice-based research. Provided the practice represents a creative response to the challenges or themes of the programme, and there is available supervision, we would welcome practice-based applications.

Am I limited to the identified Supervisory options?

No. Provided the project is based in either of the host institutions and addresses our themes, we welcome a supervision team drawn from across the expertise available. It might be that a member of the Creative Bridges team is added as a co-supervisor. You will need at least two supervisors and your Primary supervisors must be from School of Media and Communication if applying to Leeds and either School of Creative Arts, Performance and Visual Cultures or the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies if applying to Warwick.

Can I apply as an International Applicant?

Yes.

UKRI imposes a cap of 30% on International Applicants, meaning in effect that a maximum of 1 International student per year can be admitted to the scheme.

In addition to the application material identified above, international applicants will also need to provide evidence of their English language proficiency to be offered a place.

The minimum English language requirements for these studentships is IELTS of 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent.

My previous academic training was not directly in media/creative industries. Can I apply?

Yes. Provided the project addresses our themes, and it is a project that has identified supervision support, we are open to the disciplinary backgrounds of applicants. Use the answer to the studentship question on previous experience to explain the relationship between your training, experience and the project you are proposing or applying to.

Are there options for Part-time Study?

Yes. Both Leeds and Warwick offer part-time study options. Stipend will be calculated pro-rata for part-time applicants.

UKVI regulations means part-time study options are only available to Home applicants

Can I apply for both the Project and Theme studentships?

Yes. You will still need a supervisor who has agreed to supervise your Theme studentship application and a research proposal. Please make your supervisors aware you are applying to both schemes.

Do I need to move to Leeds or Warwick?

Both universities expect full-time PhD students to live within a reasonable distance to be able to routinely attend supervision and training events. The stipend will not cover any travel costs to or from a home institution.
